SMI'13 proposed organization and info

Conference Chairs: Peter Comninos & Bianca Falcidieno

Technical Papers Programme Chairs: Valery Adzhiev, Michela Spagnuolo & Alla Sheffer

Local Organisation Committee Chair: Oleg Fryazinov

Courses & Tutorials Chair: Eike Anderson (Coventry University)

Dates for the event:

8th to 12th of July 2013 or 9th to 13th of September 2013 The second date will allow SMI-13 to coincide with the VFX & Computer Animation Competition Finals and the VFX & Animation Festival in Bournemouth organised by the VFX Hub at Bournemouth University. (The actual date of this event has not been finalised yet. So the 9th to 13th of September date is provisional.)

The VFX & Computer Animation Competition will be a national event, where students from various UK universities are invited to compete for entry. Once admitted to the competition, individuals will form production teams and will work together in producing a VFX or Computer Animation artefact that will be judged by an independent panel of industry judges and prizes will be given to the top projects. This event takes a form of a summer school, where the students are resident at BU for a period of 6 weeks and are provided with subsistence and accommodation. This event will be sponsored by NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) and by SkillSet (the Creative Industries' Sector Skills Council) and the prizes will be sponsored by the UK VFX production industry.

The prize giving ceremony of the VFX & Computer Animation Competition will be combined with an international VFX & Animation Festival in Bournemouth.

Combining the SMI-13 conference with this event will give us the opportunity to expose some of the latest research in solid modelling to the VFX & Computer Animation production industry.

General Information:

Bournemouth:

Bournemouth is a large coastal town on the south coast of Britain situated approximately 80 Km west of Southampton. Bournemouth is but in name a budding city – a tourist resort with its own cathedral, one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the UK, a new up-and-coming university and an exiting nightlife with many hotels, clubs and restaurants. Bournemouth has its own international airport and regular rail and road links to London. A mild microclimate and an eight-kilometre stretch of golden-sand beach with clear-blue waters.

Bournemouth University:

Bournemouth University is a new and fast growing university with a population of approximately 17K students and is the home of the Media School and the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA). The Media School is the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK and the NCCA is recognised as being the premier centre in the UK for research and education in the fields of Computer Animation and VFX. The NCCA earned the highest grade for Computer Animation research in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) organised but the UK government and has recently been awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Anniversary Prize for “World leading teaching in Computer Animation and its wider creative and technical applications”. This prize was awarded to BU for the achievements of the NCCA in this field.
